Hamilton Roof Leak After a Storm: Repair, Tarp, or Replace?

Shamrock

When a roof leaks after a storm in Hamilton, the first question is usually practical: what do I need to do right now? The second question comes right behind it: is this going to be a repair, a tarp, a replacement, or an insurance claim?

The right answer depends on the source of the leak and whether the storm created the damage.

If water is still coming in

Protect the interior first. Move belongings, catch the water, photograph the damage, and avoid electrical hazards. If the ceiling is sagging, stay clear of the area until someone can assess it safely.

If the roof has an opening or more rain is coming, emergency tarping may be needed. A tarp is not a repair, but it can stop additional water from damaging drywall, insulation, flooring, and framing.

Common storm leak causes around Hamilton

Hamilton and Fairfield homes see a mix of older roofs, mature trees, and wind-driven rain. After storms, we commonly check:

  • Missing shingles
  • Lifted or creased shingles
  • Damaged ridge cap
  • Chimney flashing
  • Pipe boots
  • Valleys clogged with debris
  • Gutters overflowing behind fascia
  • Tree limb impacts

The stain inside does not always sit below the entry point. Water can travel along rafters before it drops onto drywall.

When repair may be enough

Repair may be enough if the leak comes from a small flashing issue, a cracked pipe boot, a limited shingle failure, or a small area of storm damage on an otherwise healthy roof.

The age of the roof matters. Newer shingles can often be repaired cleanly. Older brittle shingles can break during repair, turning a small job into a bigger one.

When replacement enters the conversation

Replacement becomes more likely when storm damage is spread across multiple slopes, the roof is already near the end of its life, leaks have happened before, matching shingles are not available, or decking damage is found during inspection.

Our repair or replacement basics explain the larger decision.

Should you call insurance?

Do not file just because a contractor says to. First, find the cause. If wind, hail, or falling debris created the opening, insurance may be part of the conversation. If the leak came from age, poor flashing, or maintenance, it may not be.

Shamrock was founded by former insurance adjusters, so we inspect with the claim question in mind without forcing every roof problem into a claim.
