Hail Damage on Siding: What to Look For in Cincinnati
Hail damage on siding shows up as cracks, holes, and broken edges on vinyl, round dents on aluminum, chips and cracks on fiber cement, and dents, splits, or chipped paint on wood. Start with the wall that faced the storm. If you find fresh damage, photograph it before anyone cleans up or makes repairs.
Spring is hail season around Cincinnati. After a storm, most people look up at the roof. I tell homeowners to look at the walls too. Wind drives hail in at an angle, so the side of the house that faced the storm can take more hits than you expect.
Where should you look for hail damage on siding?
Hail rarely hits every wall the same. Walk the whole house, but spend the most time on the side that faced the wind.
- Find the storm side. Look at the soft metal first: gutters, downspouts, window wraps, and the fins on your air conditioner. Fresh dents there tell you which way the hail came from. Our hail damage roof guide explains how to read those dents and how hail is sized.
- Scan that wall from about 10 feet back. Low sun across the wall makes dents and cracks easier to see. Early morning or late afternoon works best.
- Then get close. Run your eyes along the bottom edge of each vinyl panel, where cracks often start. Check corner posts, J-channel around windows, and trim.
- Check the other walls. Wind can shift during a storm. Compare each wall to one that was sheltered.
- Look inside. Water stains on drywall under a window or near an outside wall can mean water is getting behind the siding.
What does hail damage look like on each type of siding?
| Siding | What hail damage looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | Cracks, punctures, broken bottom edges, chipped corners. Thin cracks can be easy to miss. | Cracks and holes let more water reach the wall behind the panel. |
| Aluminum | Round dents, sometimes with chipped paint | Dents usually affect looks more than function. Torn or split panels can let water in. |
| Wood | Dents, split boards, chipped paint or stain | Bare wood takes on water. Rot can follow if the finish is not repaired. |
| Fiber cement | Chips, cracks, broken corners, damaged paint | Water can get into chips and cracks. |
Vinyl siding is not the waterproof layer of your wall. The Vinyl Siding Institute installation manual says vinyl siding is an exterior cladding, "not water-resistive barriers." It works as a rainscreen that reduces how much water reaches the barrier underneath. A cracked panel means that barrier has to handle more water than it was meant to.
For fiber cement, James Hardie's FAQ says small cracks, chips, and dents "can be repaired with a cementitious patching compound." Larger breaks usually mean a new board.
How do you tell new hail damage from old wear?
Siding collects dings over the years. Mower rocks, baseballs, and ladders all leave marks. An insurer will want to know which damage came from this storm. Here is what I look for:
- Clean edges. A fresh crack in vinyl has sharp, clean edges. An old crack collects dirt and mildew.
- A pattern. Hail leaves many similar marks on one side of the house. A single crack near the hose bib is more likely a past bump.
- Matching damage nearby. Fresh dents in gutters, downspouts, and the AC unit on the same side support the timing.
- Bright spots. Hail can knock dirt and oxidation off painted metal and siding. Those marks fade over time, so photograph them soon.
What should you photograph after a hailstorm?
Good photos protect you whether or not you file a claim.
- A wide shot of each wall, so it is clear which side of the house you are on.
- Close-ups of each crack, hole, or dent, with a coin or tape measure for scale.
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, window wraps, and the AC unit.
- Any hailstones you saved, next to a ruler.
- Any water stains inside the house.

Can a few hail-damaged panels be repaired?
Often, yes. A damaged vinyl panel can be swapped without tearing off the wall. The Vinyl Siding Institute manual describes the method: a zip tool unlocks the panel above, the installer pulls the nails, sets a new panel, and locks the course back together.
Matching is the hard part. Siding fades, and colors and profiles get discontinued. CertainTeed's vinyl siding warranty says the company is not liable when replacement material "varies in color or gloss" from the original because of normal weathering. A new panel next to a 15-year-old wall may stand out.
If the damage is part of an insurance claim and new siding will not match, Ohio has a rule on matching. Our guide to Ohio's matching rule explains how it works. For the general repair-or-replace question, see our guide on siding repair or replacement in Cincinnati.
Does a siding warranty cover hail damage?
Usually, hail damage is a homeowners insurance matter, not a warranty matter. Some manufacturers add limited hail terms. One example is CertainTeed's vinyl siding warranty linked above. Its "Limited Hail Damage Warranty" requires the owner to pursue the repair through homeowners insurance first. If the repair costs more than the insurer pays, not counting the deductible, CertainTeed may pay the difference. That payment is capped at the value of the damaged siding products. It does not cover the deductible or labor. You must also notify CertainTeed in writing promptly.
Other brands have different terms. Find the warranty for the exact product on your house before you count on it.
Is hail damage on siding just cosmetic?
Sometimes. A few shallow dents in aluminum may never let water in. A cracked vinyl panel or a chipped fiber cement board can. Some homeowners policies treat cosmetic damage differently from damage that affects function. Read your policy or ask your agent how yours handles it. Your insurer decides what is covered.

FAQ
Can hail damage my siding even if my roof looks fine? Yes. Wind-driven hail can hit a wall harder than the roof. It also works the other way. Check both, and check the soft metal on every side of the house.
Should I pressure wash the siding to see the damage better? No. CertainTeed does not recommend power washing vinyl siding. It can force water behind the panels. A garden hose and a soft brush are enough.
How long do I have to report hail damage in Ohio? Ohio has no single deadline to report a claim. Most policies require "prompt" notice. Our Ohio homeowners insurance claims guide explains the timing.
Can I wait until spring storms are over to fix it? You can wait on small dents that do not let water in. Do not wait on cracks, holes, or missing pieces. Cover them and get them repaired so water does not reach the wall behind.
