When to Clean Gutters in the Fall Around Cincinnati

By

The best time to clean gutters in the fall is after most of the leaves have come down, which around Cincinnati usually means November. If you have big trees over the roof, do a quick check in mid-October too, so the gutters can handle fall rain while the leaves are still dropping. Then clean again in late spring.

Leaf timing changes from year to year, so watch your own trees. Here is how I would plan the season.

When do the leaves fall around Cincinnati?

Leaves fall after the color peaks. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources released its fall color forecast on September 24. It expects color to peak in Southern Ohio at the end of October and the beginning of November. Northern Ohio peaks earlier.

So in our area, most leaves come down in late October and November. Some trees drop early and some hang on late. Some oaks hold their dead leaves well into winter.

That is why one cleaning in early October is usually too soon. You clean, and then the gutters fill again.

Why not wait until the end of winter?

Cold weather is coming. The National Weather Service office in Wilmington lists the normal first fall freeze at Cincinnati's Lunken Airport as October 25, based on 1991-2020 data. So the first freeze often comes before the last leaves fall.

A gutter packed with wet leaves holds water. When it freezes, the leaves and ice add weight to the hangers and fascia. Water that cannot drain can back up at the roof edge. Our ice dam guide explains how ice at the eaves damages roofs and gutters.

Clear gutters going into December give winter melt somewhere to go.

A fall gutter plan for Cincinnati homes

This is the schedule I suggest to most homeowners. Adjust it for your trees.

WhenWhat to do
Early to mid-OctoberLook from the ground. Clear any early leaves, seeds, and twigs. Make sure every downspout flows.
November, after most leaves fallDo the main cleaning. Flush every downspout. Check pitch, seams, and hangers.
After a big wind or rainLook from the ground for overflow, sagging, or a pulled downspout.
Late springClean out seeds, flowers, and twigs from spring trees.

Homes with many trees over the roof may need more cleanings. Homes on open lots may get by with less. The twice-a-year rule on our gutter services page is a minimum.

What are the signs your gutters need cleaning now?

You can check most of these from the ground.

  1. Water spills over the front of the gutter during rain.
  2. Plants or seedlings are growing in the gutter.
  3. The gutter sags between hangers.
  4. Little or no water comes out of a downspout during rain.
  5. Water stains or streaks show on the siding below the gutter.
  6. Birds or insects are nesting in the gutter.
  7. You see dirt or debris on the ground right below the gutter line.

How do you clean gutters safely?

Falls from ladders are a real risk. If you are not comfortable on a ladder, or the house is two stories, hire it out. If you do it yourself, follow basic ladder rules. OSHA's extension ladder fact sheet is written for workers, but the same rules keep homeowners safe.

  • Set the angle. Put the base of the ladder one-quarter of its working length away from the wall. For a ladder with 16 feet of working length, that is 4 feet out.
  • Stand on firm, level ground. Do not set the ladder on soft soil, boxes, or anything unstable. Both feet of the ladder should sit evenly.
  • Extend it if you step off. If you need to step onto the roof, the ladder should extend 3 feet above the edge, or be secured at the top.
  • Keep 3 points of contact. Two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand, while you climb. Face the ladder.
  • Keep your body inside the rails. Do not lean out to reach. Climb down and move the ladder.
  • Carry tools on a belt or pull them up with a line. Do not climb with your hands full.
  • Look up for power lines. OSHA says to keep ladders and tools at least 10 feet away from power lines.
  • Check the ladder's load rating. Count your weight plus your tools.

I also tell people to skip the job on wet, windy, or frosty days, and to have someone at home while they are up there.

How do you clean gutters the right way?

  1. Start near a downspout and work away from it.
  2. Scoop out leaves and debris by hand with gloves, or with a plastic scoop. Bag it or drop it on a tarp.
  3. Do not walk on the gutter or lean the ladder on a weak gutter section.
  4. Flush the gutter with a garden hose, working toward the downspout.
  5. Run the hose into each downspout. If water backs up, clear the elbow at the top or bottom.
  6. Watch the water flow. It should run to the downspout and drain out. Standing water means the pitch is off.
  7. Look at seams, corners, and hangers while you are up there.
  8. Make sure each downspout extension is attached and points away from the house.

Skip the pressure washer. From a ladder, it is easy to damage shingles or drive water under them.

What should you look for while you are up there?

Cleaning is the best time to spot problems early.

  • Leaking seams and corners. Look for drip marks or rust lines.
  • Loose or bent hangers. A gutter that moves when you tug lightly has lost its grip.
  • Soft or stained fascia. Our soffit and fascia guide covers what that means.
  • Shingle grit in the gutter. A lot of grit can be a sign of aging shingles. See our fall roof checklist.
  • Downspouts that dump next to the foundation. Our downspout drainage guide explains how far water should go.

If you find sagging, many leaking seams, or rust, our guide to gutter repair or replacement can help you decide what to do.

FAQ

Is cleaning gutters once a year enough? For some homes, yes. Most homes do better with a main cleaning after the leaves fall and another in late spring. Homes under big trees may need more.

Should I clean gutters before or after the leaves fall? After, for the main cleaning. A quick check in October keeps water flowing while the leaves are still dropping.

Do I still need to clean gutters with gutter guards? Yes, less often. Debris collects on top of guards, and fine grit gets inside. Our gutter guard comparison covers upkeep for each type.

Can I clean gutters from the ground? Some wands and hose attachments reach a one-story gutter from the ground. They work best on loose, dry leaves. Packed, wet debris usually needs hands-on cleaning.
